Cartagena Capirotes and Holy Week in Spain

Large processions of devout catholics marching slowly through the streets in regalia that looks like the infamous Klu Klux Klan in America can be seen each year at easter in this part of Spain.

With hooded robes that are called capirotes, the dress has nothing to do with the image that many of us immediately associate. The streets of Cartagena fill with penitents who are dressed to atone for their sins and march publicly. All very strange to the casual observer, but a ritual part of this society that remains to this day.
